Marriage Licenses
Start your journey together with the official paperwork.
Applying for a License
A marriage license issued in [PARISH NAME] Parish allows you to be married anywhere within the State of Louisiana.
Both parties should appear in person to apply. However, if one party cannot attend, the appearing party must have all required documents for the absent party, and the absent party's signature on the application must be notarized.
24-Hour Waiting Period
By law, there is a 24-hour waiting period between the time the license is issued and the time the ceremony can be performed. This waiting period can only be waived by a District Judge.
Required Documents
Valid Identification
Both parties must present a valid, unexpired government-issued ID such as:
- Driver's License
- State ID Card
- Passport
- Military ID
Birth Certificates
A certified copy of each party's birth certificate is required.
- Born in Louisiana: We can often access the record electronically.
- Born outside Louisiana: You must bring a certified copy with a raised seal.
- Translation: If not in English, a certified translation is required.
Prior Marriages
If either party has been married before, you must provide proof of how the last marriage ended:
- Divorced: A certified copy of the Judgment of Divorce signed by a judge.
