Who Can Obtain a Record?
In Louisiana, birth and death records are confidential and are not public record. Access is strictly limited to protect privacy and prevent identity theft.
Authorized Individuals
- The registrant (person named on the certificate).
- Spouse, Parent, or Grandparent.
- Adult Child or Grandchild.
- Sibling (Brother/Sister).
- Legal Guardian (with court order).
Available Certificates
Birth Certificates
We can issue certified copies of birth certificates for anyone born in Louisiana from 1983 to present. For records prior to 1983, you must contact the State Registrar in New Orleans.
Death Certificates
We can issue certified copies of death certificates for deaths that occurred in Louisiana from 2012 to present. Older records must be ordered directly from the State Registrar.
How to Apply
1. Valid Photo ID
You must present a current, valid driver's license, state ID card, passport, or military ID. If your ID is expired, you cannot obtain a record.
2. Payment
We accept cash, credit/debit cards (with a small convenience fee), and money orders. No personal checks are accepted for vital records.
3. Application Form
You will need to complete a short application form upon arrival, stating your relationship to the person named on the certificate.
4. Processing Time
In-person requests are typically processed while you wait, usually taking 15-30 minutes depending on volume.
Important: Older Records
If you need a birth record before 1983 or a death record before 2012, you must contact the Louisiana Bureau of Vital Records in New Orleans. We do not have access to these archived files.
